2021 Color Trends for Interior Design

If 2020 taught us anything about our living spaces, it is that we were relying on cool tones in our decor entirely too much. We have spent the last decade turning our backs on beige, and embracing gray. I have been personally guilty of ripping out the brown flooring my parents previously laid and replacing it with gray, I also painted over the beautiful olive green my mother had chosen for the kitchen, with a green-undertoned, you guessed it... gray. (Sorry mom!) Funny enough, I've seen almost the exact same olive green in the Sherwin Williams Colormix Forecast 2021 "Sanctuary", "Oakmoss". (Again, sorry mom.)

Sure we have been glancing in the direction of warmer tones for a season or two, but we’ve really been treating them like our side chick. Mostly ignored. Then... Covid-19 happened and we were quarantined. Forced to live within our cold, sterile (over exaggeration) habitats 24/7. It was during this time, that we collectively realized, we want soft. We want cozy. We want WARMTH!

I don't foresee giving up our beloved gray or white all together, but they will definitely start to show up on walls and decor with a much warmer undertone than in 2019. Even black is looking a little more snugly this year, with Sherwin Williams Color of the Year, "Urbane Bronze". A beautiful, rich black with brown undertones, that I imagine will show up in many a Pottery Barn, West Elm, or Restoration Hardware photo.

Do I believe we are heading back into a beige only world? No. But I do believe we are about to see people leaning into the boho, desert chic, natural/earthy style. Or even more into the mid-century modern design style. This will reintroduce some colors back into the home that we haven't seen for a while. Think mustard yellow, clay colored reds, muddy oranges, mossy greens, and probably even some pinks. The key to mixing these colors into your current cool decor will be to look for more muted tones. Think soft, cozy, and easy on the eyes. But dont shy away from a pop or two of a brighter version of the same colors to add a little extra cheer to your space.
