Like most people, I have an idea of the feeling I’d like to create within my home. But sometimes getting it from idea to realized vision is easier pinned than done. Never fear! Here are a few of my tips to bring your vision to life.
Depending on the room, I’m a huge fan of statement walls. This helps set the tone for the space. It can be as simple as a single colored wall and 3 white walls. Or beautiful wallpaper that creates the start of a French farmhouse vibe. Or a lip mural on the wall behind a vanity. (Goals)
Next I decide what furniture I need. Flea markets, antique stores, yard sales, estate sales, and good old Facebook marketplace are great places to start. Not only are they usually cheap, (hello more decor budget) but finding a unique piece can take your room to the next level. I’d much rather find an old jewel with history than the basic cookie cutter stuff. Before I go, I typically have an idea of the size I need and the style I’d like to have. By this point I have already pinned approximately 8,957 “inspo” photos of different ideas I’d like, so I have a clue of what crucial pieces to be looking for to create the design I want.
Sometimes I find the perfect piece of furniture, but it isn't in the color wheel I’m working for the space. No problem. I have never been one to pass up a makeover. Painting furniture is like painting the walls, it can make a room look brand new with very little cost.
Finishing touches. This ranges from rugs to lighting and everything in between. Rugs can be very expensive so always be on the lookout for these in the same places as furniture. (Just be sure to clean it well.) I love to add some personality to every room, by throwing in something unexpectedly quirky that fits with our family’s silliness. For instance, in my living room I have a golden T-Rex, because like most 90’s kids, I have a dinosaur obsession. Thank you Jurassic Park. It makes me so happy every time I see it. Art is an easy way to do this as well! It can be a pop of color, or you can use a larger piece as the focus of a space and choose the colors based off of it. I try to keep all other decor in the same vibe that I want. Bohemian? Add wicker baskets, a tassel chandelier, layered rugs, and ALL the plants. Glam? Layer mixed metals, mirrors, crystal, and velvet chairs. Modern Farmhouse? Go for natural textures like wood and wicker and mix with worn pieces like iron light fixtures, throw in a little burlap or linen and you’re good to go.
